Easy Peasy Shopping at Evanscycles

It took less than 10 days to get these items.  There are two more items in the basket.  This time for myself.

I was rather astonished that It was so easy to buy cycling clothes from UK and I received them with no problem.  As I wrote previously, I bought them from the EVANS CYCLES, UK website(details here) the other day.

After that I checked several websites to learn about the rules of private import from overseas, especially from UK.  There are several rules which I did not know.
1.  Evans cycles will pay the shipping costs if the total amount of order exceed 50 pounds.
2.  VAT of UK is 17.5% and 15% will be paid back to the customers if purchased from overseas.  Evans cycles website automatically calculate 15% subtracted prices.
3.  Some of bicycles can not be purchased from overseas and these are tagged "UK delivery only"”Ship2store only”
4.  Consumption tax of Japan will be imposed 5% of "net taxable amount"= 60% of total price. If the net taxable amount was below 10000yen (or total price was below 16666yen,  consumption tax will not be imposed.

Luckily, I ordered kids' clothes and total price was over 50 pounds and the net taxable amount was 9301yen, I did not have to pay either shipping cost or consumption tax of Japan.

New best time broke an hour.

http://maps.google.com/?q=http://share.abvio.com/7cb0/1020/4dc2/c2c1/Cyclemeter-Cycle-20110627-1927.kml

I did not even think about this but the ride from my office to my apartment broke the record time last night.  It used to be 61minutes and yesterday was 57 minutes.  I don't think I pedaled faster, it was as usual.  May be because not many traffic lights stopped me yesterday just by chance.  I guess I was just lucky.

I am not going to be too conscious about breaking the record again, otherwise I would have more chances to be involved with accidents.

The reason Police don't matter

Since I had on duty until 9 am this morning, I came home with my Brompton this morning.  It is very good for cyclists to go out in Sunday morning.  Although the distance I cycled today was 10% longer, it took me 1 hour and 2 minutes, which is about the best time.

On the way home, I saw a red Mecedez parked on the street with the hazard lamps lighted and a bicycle with bended wheels and bended frame.  It was obvious that the car and the bike had a contact.  Fortunately, the rider was standing by himself.

I passed by them and stopped at the next traffic light which is about 100 meters from them.  Soon after I stopped there, one police car stopped besides me.  It is also obvious that these gentlemen in the car also recognized the car and the bike.  So I told them
"I have seen an accident of a car and a bike and it was 100 meter from here."
And they replied
"Oh, yeah?"
but did not exhibit interest to that.  They did not even pretend to talk through the radio and they just tried to close the power window to stop conversation with me.  So I said
"Don't you go and examine the accident site?"
The guy finally said
"We are going, OK?"
and turned the siren on and headed to the location.

I assume that Japanese police do not care about bicycles because they can not obtain any rights or interests associated with bicycle industries or consumers.  Therefore bicycle accidents were no longer considered as their matters.

SO GOOD, SO NICE, I GOT YOU!

I like Brompton very much and there is no other bikes I can commute with like I mentioned before.  But as I have seen many cross bikes on the streets, I can not stop myself from being attracted by them.  I mean they attract me all the time.

I have to make money in advance to buy a cross bike.  But I can feel it is not long before I buy a cross bike.

So good! So nice!   I got you!........... you got me!

Cool wind on route 319

On the way back home, I could choose either route 418 or 319.  Both routes are comfortable for cyclists and I take one of these every time.  Yesterday, I chose route 319, Gaien-Higashi Dori, and I found that the air in some part of the route is slightly cooler than other places.   May be because this area is surrounded by trees called Ginguu Forest.  Since I was riding on my Brompton, it took only five minutes or so to pass through there.  But I could definitely feel the difference and It was so comfortable.

Humid June wind

Two months has passed since I came back to Japan and my bicycle commuting career has become two months.  The good news is I got used to commute by Brompton for a little longer than one hour.  The bad news is it is not a special experience any more for me to complete 16 kilometer ride from my office to my apartment.  Not special enough to write something on my blog.

It is rainy season now in Tokyo.  Fortunately it was not heavy rain and I could come home by bicycle last night. The night like yesterday, the air tend to be humid and the wind blowing against me during cycling is also humid and not very comfortable.

The temperature will rise up to 35 degree in Celcius in July and August.  Sometimes over 30 degree even at night.  I will tell you how I feel the wind during summer night in Tokyo.

”Po-chitto” the kids' cycle clothes from UK

すぐに返事が返ってきて、"Of Course, you can"とのこと。

On the way back home from my office, I pass by several big shopping Town such as Ikebukuro, Shinjuku, Harajuku, Shibuya and Ebisu.  I have no problem in finding cycle shops in those towns except for cycle clothes.  However, I can find cycle clothes for myself in most of those shops but it is quite difficult to find cycle clothes for children.

Tonight, I am on duty and staying in the office.   It is not a busy night, fortunately.  And I have time to net-surf to see the websites of cycle shops abroad.  I miss the days in London with my friends from all over the world and I miss cycle shops in London.

I went to EVANS CYCLE's website just to see what's up in London.  Oh, yes, they do have a lot of good stuff there.  And I could find cycle clothes for my kids.  Jerseys for my kids, shorts for my kids, gloves for my kids........click, click, click and I could finished all the procedures with no problem.  I did it very, very easily like buying books from Amazon.

I was not sure whether I could get my VAT refund but I asked them if I have any chance of it.  And I got a reply from them just now and they said "Of course you can"

It is getting common in Japanese to use "Po-chitto" as verb alternative to "buy online" since the sound of click is expressed as "Po-chitto".  Although it is very convenient,  I have to control myself not to Po-chitto too many buttons on the cycle shops' websites.

Commuting with Brompton in Tokyo Brompton

As you might know, commuting trains or subways in Tokyo are very crowded with some exceptions.  Generally speaking, trains toward Central Tokyo are unbelievably crowded whereas Trains from Tokyo towards suburban areas are not necessarily crowded and some of them carry only a few people in each car.

Fortunately, the overground trains I usually take are not very crowded and being in the train is tolerable for me even during rush hours.  What I meant to say tolerable is that I can read newspaper during the journey.  Or I can say that I can find the place for my Brompton easily.

Inside the overground Trains

There is another route to go to my office, by taking underground trains.  Usually there are more people in underground trains "Nan-boku line" or "Toei Mita line".  It is better than the worst but is hard to find the space for my Brompton in most cases.  And It is somewhat annoying for neighbours to place my Brompton on the floor.

Inside the underground Train

If I take the trains running towards opposite direction from mine,  you will not get in the trains unless you have certain skills to do so.  You will not find  a space for your foot, and you'd better forget about your Brompton.

WELCOME TO MY BLOG ALL THE WAY FROM RUSSIA and AUSTRIA

Since 9th of June, I set FLAG counter on my website.  It calculate the number of visitors sorted by the countries and show the flags of these countries.  It is my honour to have many flags on my website and I welcome everybody from all over the world.

In the mean time, there is similar function in the stats view of Blogger's administrator page.  I have seen almost all the country names as FLAG counter with some exceptions.  These are Russia and Austria.(I guess may be some other countries as well)

Dear my visitors from Russia and Austria.  I would like to express my appreciation to have you here.  Please come again and keep in touch, will you?  And I will keep working on displaying your flag by asking FLAG counter provider.

Careless riders make bicycles dangerous

http://www.yomiuri.co.jp/editorial/news/20110611-OYT1T00893.htm

This is the article from The Yomiuri Shimbun, one of the opinion leading newspaper in Japan.  We, cyclists, have to admit that some of those described examples as bad behaviors are true.  But it is not true that cyclists are responsible for all the problems associated with bicycles.  Some of those are political matters, some of those are due to lacking adequate information.

It is not wise for the cyclists to provoke pedestrians and it is not wise to give the press a chance to criticize cyclists.

And we should recognize that public opinion is easily influenced by these newspapers or news on TV and that opinion leaders such as The Yomiuri Shimbun are run by people rarely take commuting trains, subways, or bicycles.

Careless riders make bicycles dangerous

Many people have been given a fright as a bicycle charges straight at them as they walk along the sidewalk.
Cases of bicycles colliding with pedestrians while trying to dart by them are hardly rare.
Not a few people ride bicycles at night without a light on. People are often seen riding bicycles while talking on a mobile phone--or even using e-mail.
Cyclists speeding along sidewalks or making startled pedestrians jump aside at the sound of a bell have become an everyday sight.
Such an annoying and self-centered lack of traffic manners must be denounced in the firmest terms.
Under the Road Traffic Law, bicycles are classified as vehicles like cars. But cyclists have long been permitted to ride on sidewalks despite the lack of a clear legal basis to do so.
===
Law poorly understood
The law was revised in 2008 to allow cyclists to use sidewalks in exceptional situations, but it still aims to keep cyclists and pedestrians apart as much as possible. The revised law in principle makes it mandatory for cyclists to use roadways, but allows them to run on sidewalks if the roadway--such as a busy thoroughfare--is especially dangerous.
But according to a government survey, 40 percent of the public is not aware of the principle that bicycles are meant to be ridden on roadways. This indicates that the purpose of the law revision has not been widely recognized.
Of course, cyclists are the most vulnerable parties in roadway traffic. It is primarily motorists who have the duty of care on roadways. However, when reckless cyclists do things like threading between cars stopped at traffic lights, it sometimes results in accidents.
National Police Agency data on traffic accidents shows that about 20 percent of accidents in the past decade, a high proportion, involved bicycles.
Reported collisions between bicycles and pedestrians totaled about 2,900 in 2009 and 2,800 in 2010, a huge increase over about 1,800 a decade before.
===
Accidents are expensive
Bicyclists must remember that they may pay a high price if they cause an accident.
According to court rulings on bicycle accidents in recent years, a high school student was ordered to pay more than 60 million yen in compensation for hitting a pedestrian and causing serious spinal damage, while another high school student was ordered to pay nearly 40 million yen for killing a pedestrian.
In contrast to automobile accidents, there is no compulsory liability insurance system to cover bicycle accidents. It is difficult to pay such huge liability judgments, often making it impossible for victims to receive compensation. This is a serious problem.
We suggest studying a plan encouraging cyclists to take out an insurance policy on a voluntary basis. So-called "TS [traffic safety] stickers" issued by bicycle dealers after inspection and maintenance of bicycles would be included with the insurance. Subscribing to such insurance could enhance bicyclists' consciousness of safe riding.
The number of cyclists has increased along with public concern about health and the environment. The increase has been accelerated in recent months by disruptions in transportation systems in the aftermath of the Great East Japan Earthquake.
But bicycles can turn into dangerous weapons when carelessly used. Bicycle riders should be aware of this.

Sunday mornig family ride

Shiba-Park, Tokyo

The Tokyo Tower. To take the picture of the whole view, many tourists were groveling on the ground .

Another Sunday morning cycling with my son today.  We went to the area around Tokyo Tower this morning.  There are several parks and a big famous temple in this area.  The place we chose was exactly under The Tokyo Tower but it was something like a small forest and we felt as if we were in the mountain area.

So far, we have been to three major parks in central Tokyo area.  Among those three, my son's recommendation is "Yoyogi park"  because of its size and comfortability, and he also mentioned "The cycling road inside the park is really attractive to children like me."

First Bathtime for my Brompton Brompton

It has been two months since I first rode my Brompton in April.  And I noticed that two months is long enough to get greasy muck around the gears and the chain.  So I went to cycle shop this afternoon and bought detergent arranged for bicycles.

To tell the truth, it is my first to do a maintenance of bicycles by myself.  So I followed the tips I have read at the cycle shop.  1.refill the tubes 1.Clean up the chain and the gears, 2.dry them off, 3. lubricate the gears and the chain.

And now, my Brompton is glittering and looks like brand-new.  I can't wait to go out for cycling next morning with my son.

Instalment 2 / Brompton Team

INSTALMENT TWO

Since the first mail out last month we have been contacted by a number of people asking us to tell them what project X is; needless to say, the lips of our design team remain tightly sealed. A large number wondered whether this would be the introduction of the first carbon fibre Brompton. A few weeks ago we asked them whether Project X had anything to do with carbon fibre, their reply was a flat “No.”

They were a bit more forthcoming by the start of this month when Brompton was visited by Mayor of London, Boris Johnson.  As part of the factory tour, the Mayor was lucky enough to be given a demonstration of Project X by Will Butler-Adams, Managing Director, and Will Carleysmith, Head of Design. A keen bike rider himself, Boris was clearly impressed, so much so, that by the end of the demonstration he remarked:

“I tell you what, when that’s released, I want to be the first to have one”.

We hope to have more information for you in the coming weeks.

Forgive me God!

「わぁ===」

I headed for the swimming club where my children attended just after work.  It was about 16 kilometer long to get there and I passed by numerous notable sights of central Tokyo on the way.  The most popular spot of those is The Roppongi Hills Building.  And there are two tunnels penetrating under the building.

Just in front of the tunnel mouth, I noticed that I have never pass through tunnels by bicycles for years.  I was so scared to go in the tunnel  that I overlooked very important road traffic signs.  "No Bicycles"

I have written hundreds times on this site how important it is to follow the traffic regulations.  And today, I have to confess that I have committed a traffic violation.

"Forgive me God! Forgive me my dear readers."
Even if I have shouted like this in the tunnel, God would not have heard me.

Do you know why?  Because the wall inside of these tunnel is covered by special acoustic absorption plates to reduce car-noise for the neighbours.

So I would like to say it one more time.  "Forgive me God! Forgive me my dear readers!"

The second Tunnel "Azabu Tunnel" is also "No Bicycle"

Slow bikes, Fast bikes

http://blog.cycleroad.com/archives/51793714.html

As I mentioned previously, the number of commuting bicycles are increasing rapidly.  In the meantime, roads in Japan are designed mainly for automobiles and bicycle riders are often neglected.

Until two months ago, I was in London and I have seen many commuting bicycles.  They wore helmets and colored vests for their safety and no bicycles ran slowly on the street.  They seemed to observe traffic regulations.

There are many road bikes passing by on the street in Tokyo recently.  But more and more MAMA-CHARI (=bicycles designed for mothers and even for old people).  Honestly, they are not conscious of traffic regulations very much.  Indeed, it is shameful not to observe the rules.  But it could be true that they had been the main bicycle users in Japan for a long time.

There is no doubt that the increase of bicycle users will contribute to change the roads in Japan more bicycle-friendly.  However, I assume that we need some extra efforts to make it happen.

Adult bicycle users like me recently came back to bicycles from automobiles know more about the traffic regulations than teenagers or non-drivers.  And we may be more conscious of observing them.  Fortunately, we have both rights to vote and purchasing power.  We could be good promoters to follow the regulations by doing so and we could be good promoters to make better environment for bicycles by being smart consumers and by being smart voters.

Excessive sweating after commuting 6

21.9 degree Celcius.  It was 21.9 C in Northern Tokyo this morning.  Apparently, it was much hotter than 21.  However, it was quite comfortable cycling from Ikebukuro Station to my office.

It took me about 15 minutes to get to the office.  I have read somebody's blog or comment that it would be comfortable to cycle even in summer time since you get the wind blow all the time.  In the beginning I thought that it could be true.

When I stopped for the first red signal, I noticed that something was happening.  My body temperature got warmer and I was already sweating.  But when I start again, The winds blew all of my sweat and I could forget about sweating.  I felt comfortable again.  And then stopped, and started...

I arrived at the office finally.  Folded my Brompton and went up to my desk by elevator.   Again, I noticed something was happening......  Sweating.  Soon after that I noticed that it wasn't mild sweating, it was excessive sweating.
My decision was to take a shower before work.  I could not stop sweating without taking a cold shower.

It is going to be hotter and hotter in Japan.  If I continue to commute by bicycle, I have to spare time for taking a shower before work.  Today, I learnt that No cycling without sweating during summer in Japan.

Hiyoshi-Zaka memory

My younger son's kickboard

I was planning to go cycling with my two sons for the first time this morning.  As I wrote previously, while my elder son and I went cycling together several times already, my younger son has just been able to cycle last month.  He wasn't confident about cycling long distance yet.

I let him ride his bike in front of our bike garage.
"I am not so sure about how to ride..."

I decided to run after him and left my Brompton in the garage.  There were many people on the pavement around my neighbourhood.  A couple of minutes after departure, we arrived at the top of the slope "Hiyoshi-Zaka".  And suddenly my younger son got off his bike.

"I think I'd better walk down the slope because I had an accident several months ago in the middle of Hiyoshi-Zaka."
Yes, he had an accident with his kickboard when I was in London.  I told him again and again that he would be all right today.  I promised him that I never leave my hand from his shoulder.

After kick board accident in January
He thoroughly went down the slope with hand braking.  It was not a big deal for him and he noticed that too.
"Daddy, you were right.  It wasn't a big deal at all."

We ran 5 to 10 more minutes and finally arrived at the destination, the cycle shop in Shirokane-Takanawa.  My elder son has already arrived and started seeing bicycles in the shop already.

On the way back home, it was a pretty tough climbing course.  My elder son went up with no problem, and my younger son also managed to climbed up the slope by himself (to my surprise).

It won't be long before we go cycling together.  May be in this summer.

Thank you, Dad \(^-^)/

I received a phone call from Shinagawa Branch of Tokyo Metropolitan Transportation Office "The missing object you are looking for was found and we will keep it for the next 48 hours at most."

My second son received birthday cerebrating messages from his classmates.  He was so happy to have it that he brought the messages with him on the way to the swimming lesson.  Unfortunately, he left that in the bus when he got off the bus for some reasons.

So I called the transportation office and ask them to find the missing memorabilia.  Several hours after that I received a call I wrote on the top of this post.  So I went to Shinagawa after my work.  A little bit longer journey than usual days.

From my office to my apartment is almost flat journey with some ups and downs.  I usually don't mentioned the names of each areas or streets when driving in Tokyo.  But once I cycle on the street of Tokyo, I do care about the names very much.  I found that I need to go up the slope to get to the areas with YAMA(=mountain) or  DAI(=hill) as postfix.  I need to go down the slope to get to the areas with Tani(=valley) or Hashi(=bridge) as postfix.

There are many ups and down on the way.  I crossed over the the final hill(or mountain) of the journey called Yatsu-YAMA-BASHI(HASHI)" and got to the metropolitan transportation office.
Yatsuyama-bashi Crossing

The staff in the office gave me the memorabilia of my son.  Pretty cards must have been so attractive to my son.  I knew he would be glad if I brought it back home, I am very glad to get it back, too.

I checked my iphone before I left the transportatoin office and I found one message from my son.  He sent it with my wife's cell phone.  I never taught him how to write messages by cell phones but he knew how to send messages with a smiling face.
