ENVY

I understood riding road bikes is really fun.  The reason I bought was simply because of its brand name.  In fact, it was a really great bike and make me ride it everyday.

But I have to confess that I haven't cycle with my Brompton for the last 1 month.  There is no way for Brompton to compete against road bikes just for cycling certain distances.

I am thinking of going somewhere out of town with my Brompton ... must be nice

I have been thinking about Going out for a Business trip with my Brompton for months.  but I am not the kind of business person going out for business trips frequently so I really don't know the place very well when I visit somewhere for business matter.

Nagoya is the only city I visit on a periodic basis, usually twice a year.  Additionally, I had another business trip to Nagoya so I visit there two weeks in a row on this month.  Yesterday, I checked around the city and seemed all right for cycling.

I might bring my Brompton next week ....

The Road to my road-bike

It has been 7 months since I started cycling to and back from work.  The views while cycling, although I have seen those from the front glass of my car, were fascinating and seemed totally different.  Summer time is too hot to cycle but winter time in Tokyo isn't too bad to cycle.

I am sure I love my Brompton and I will keep on cycling with it.  But I wanted something more.  Something faster.

One day, I met old friend of mine and he told me how fun triathlon is.  Oh, Boy! He bought a great road bike manufactured by De Rosa.  On that night, I decided to buy my road bike.

Road bikes are not cheap.  In fact, there is wide variation in prices.  But most of those attracted me were not cheap, cost more than a couple of thousand dollars at least.

I found one manufacturer in Netherland since I was so familiar to the name of the brand. KOGA.

Why is KOGA in Netherland?  The brand name KOGA named after top two letters of the founder's surname "Gaastra"and that of his wife "Kowalik".  What a coincidence!!

It was early October that I went to cycle shop in Ikebukuro, Tokyo.  I back-ordered 2012 model of KOGA Kimera 3K.   And I waited a bit more than a month to receive it.  Now I am really ready for triathlon races.

I changed the title of the blog and the logo.  I guess I spent quite amount of money until now.  From now, I have to prove that it is not waste of money.  And I am sure I can do it.  Please check once in sometimes that I keep working on it.

Palace cycling with my son

I have been waiting for today to cycle around Imperial Palace in Central Tokyo.  Unfortunately, Elder son was not able to join me since he had exam in his cram school.  So I took my younger son to go to Imperial Palace.

Palace Cycling is a kind of event for cyclists.  A part of the road around Imperial Palace was provided only for cyclists between 10-16 on every Sunday.

It is not to mention that It was such a beautiful scenery around the road.  No automobiles disturb us from cycling, no air pollution, no immoral cyclists (staffs may be from Japan Cycling Association give warnings to this kind of cyclists).

Even if you are a tourist, there is free rental bike service.  So if you have a chance to visit Tokyo on Sunday and feel like cycling, why don't you go to Nijyuu-bashi to pick up a bicycle and take a ride.

Palace cycling /

Today is the day my son go to Sunday clam school of science experiments.  I thought it would be more fun if he went there by bike.  So I  decided to take him there by bike.  It was about 10km distance from my apartment.  Although roads on the way usually have heavy traffic, we arrived at the destination safe and secure.

While he was taking the class, I went to Uchibori Street, the street around Imperial palace.  This street is open to cyclists on every Sunday.  No automobiles, no motorcycles, nothing but bicycles.

Not only road bikes, there are all kinds of bicycles cycling together.  It not to mention that the road condition is more than perfect since this is the street in front of Imperial palace.

I am quite sure I will be back there again and next time I will take two sons with bicycles.

INSTALMENT FOUR / Brompton

Here I received a message from Brompton.  Now Project X is revealed a bit more.

eBrompton is not what I really expected because I don't need e-assisted pedals.  I rather expected much lighter Brompton than -x model...

In fact, there are a lot of e-bikes in Japan and they are very popular mainly among young and middle aged women.  So let's see what eBrompton is like.

INSTALMENT FOUR

Hello

Project X has been running for some months now and we have received a number of enquiries as a result. Guesses of what Project X might be have ranged from a fully titanium Brompton (it’s not), to a carbon fibre Brompton (no again) to a pair of Brompton-branded slippers (definitely not, but full marks for imagination).

We are now in a position where we are happy to reveal to you a project we have been working on for the past six years.

Project X is the code name for the eBrompton. The eBrompton is a Brompton in every sense; it folds to the compact size you have come to expect, it outperforms its peers and it is robust. But it has something extra...

The ‘extra’ comes in the form of pedal-assist, provided by a powerful motor.

Initially, the eBrompton will be made in a limited run and restricted to two territories in 2012: the UK and Germany. If you are in either of these countries and would like to be considered for these early-release bikes you will be able to register your interest for this in the near future.

We are expecting full roll-out, including the ability to retrofit, by 2013.

Excited? We are.

In terms of how the bicycle will work, and its full spec, we’re no pushovers; you’ll have to wait for the next update for more information. Let’s just say, we expect great things…

Best wishes,

The Brompton team

I would like to thank all of you visited my website from all over the world.  I am very glad to see more than 30 Flags here.  Please keep in touch and see me soon.

Once again, thank you very much.

Back to Cycle

Kids went back to school on the 1st of September.  And I started cycling again today.

Today's route/

There are several reasons why I am back in cycling today.
The 1st reason is that weather is little bit milder than that in August.  Comfortable weather for cycling is back now.

The 2nd reason is that I gained weight during 'summer break' .  Several days ago, I set my life time body weight record.  No more sushi and YAKINIKU(Japanese style grilled beef).  I have to keep myself healthy until all of my kids grow up.

The 3rd reason is that I did not give up trying Triathlon next year.  I have to make my legs ready to swim, to run and to cycle.

And today, I realized that cycling in TOKYO is ....... so gooood.

First Rinko /

RINKO is japanese term meaning traveling with one's own bicycle.  Lately, as cycling getting popular, more people trying to enjoy RINKO in Japan.  Bicycle magazines are introducing how to RINKO.  I made my kids partner of cycling first, and then I made a plan to RINKO.  And then my wife confirmed my plan with no objection.

The last weekend of my kids' summer vacation, we RINKO-ed to Okinawa island.

I took my Brompton, my elder son took his bike in the bag, my younger son wore his helmet

A bus and a train and a plane, it was really long way to go.

Checking in at the Airport

Having a happy time with my 1y.o. daughter in the plane, no rest at all!

Flight time to Okinawa was 2h30min

Manza-MO to the hotel, about 10km long cycling
the younger son rent a bike at the hotel and he was happy to be in the team.  We went to Manza-Mo by rent-a-car first and came back by bike.

At the Starting point, The Younger Son was so nervous as he was a beginner cyclist

It took about an hour to the hotel.  In the mid point, we had a break and made that place the goal of the younger son.  The elder son was exhausted.  I was very glad cycling the road along the beautiful coast of Okinawa island.

After they took shower, my kids were enjoying the sunset.
So good, so nice, we will be there again some day.

New visitors from Austria and Brazil !!

I have not ridden my Brompton for the last 2 weeks.  Because of hot weather, or rain.  I haven't been feel like cycling may be because I have had too much homework.  it takes about 40-50 minutes to go and come back home by overground train or subway.  It is such a comfortable time in the train to read books or articles.

Finishing my work is the best solution to get back to my Brompton.

May be a little more time and I will be back.

From more than 20 countries /

It has been almost one month since I placed Flag Counter on my website.  Today, I found the 20th flag on the counter, which is the flag of Indonesia.  As I mentioned previously, there should be more flags on the screen since I noticed visitors from Russia, India, Austria, Ukraine, and some other countries.

It is my pleasure to welcome you here and it is my pleasure to inform you about an example of "Livining with Brompton in Japan".  This blog is designed not only for the visitors from Japan but from all over the world.  So, even though my ability to write in English is not good enough, I write both in Japanese and English.  Forgive me if some of the articles don't make sense.

Thank you again for all of you visited here from all over the world and I hope we will keep in touch!  Thank you.    \(^_^ )/`

Instalment Three / Brompton

It is such a good news from Brompton that the project X is making progress.  I am not sure what this really is but seems like New style Brompton will be much lighter than ordinary ones and Its' size, originality, durability remains the same.

I was bit surprized that there are only a few Bromptons on the street in Tokyo, Japan.  The price, relatively expensive than other bicycles, is one of the key issues but I think there is another reason.

In my case, Brompton's portability is essential to be chosen from among many kinds of bicycles.  I prefer to take (over or under)ground trains on the way to the office since I don't want to be late and I don't want to sweat too much before work.

But as I wrote previously, commuting trains running into Tokyo are usually more than "crowded".  And there is no doubt that it is hard (almost impossisble) to find room to place Brompton in the commuting trains.  I was one of the exceptions that can carry Brompton by trains.

In most cases in Tokyo, if people prefer to choose bicycles by means of commuting, they have to ride bicycles for their whole distance.  On the way and on the way back.  Those people are not motivated enough to buy Bromptons only because Bromptons can be folded.

If we can see how people in UK enjoy their life with Bromptons, more Japanese cyclists become Brompton fans........such a movie like this

INSTALMENT THREE
Hi,

As progress on Project X continues apace we thought it would be a good opportunity to discuss the considerations of Will and the design team as they develop a new product:

Weight
The Brompton has always been designed to be light enough to be genuinely portable. In any case where the total weight of the bike would increase, there has to be a very strong argument for improving the performance or function of the bike. Our designers are always striving to reduce the weight without compromising strength or durability (the lightest spec of Brompton, an S1E-X, currently comes in at 9.0kg).
Project X will be the lightest product of its kind, yet it will out-perform all its competitors.

Brompton S1E-XBrompton Pentaclip

Size
Along with weight, another key criterion the design team considers with any improvement is whether it will increase the size of the folded package. Brompton bikes are renowned for their compact fold; this makes them easy to slot into luggage racks on trains, under the desk at work, in a late night cab, indeed anywhere where space is at a premium. One rarely (if ever) needs to lock up a Brompton outside; you can pretty much always take it with you. Project X will not, in any way, increase the size of the folded Brompton package.

Originality
Ever since Andrew Ritchie built the first prototype, the Brompton way has been to never adhere to convention. Each product is carefully thought out and designed with the user in mind. This can often mean taking a totally new approach but the end result is a well thought-out product that offers a new and improved take on what has gone before.

Functionality & Durability
A Brompton should be accessibl
e to as many people as possible. This means that any improvements are also user-friendly and intuitive. It is for this reason that products such as the Pentaclip (the connector between the seat post and the saddle) were introduced; it offers an unlimited range of positions and angles for any rail saddle (including the Brompton standard saddle) so it can be adjusted to the preference of each individual. A Brompton is also built to last. The bike, components and accessories are designed with long-term, rigorous use in mind. A large number of parts are fatigue-tested to destruction to ensure no part on the bike is unable to stand up to the conditions of everyday use. All new products and improvements have to be able to stand the test of time and, where possible, must be retro-fittable to bikes already in use.

By the time Project X goes on general release, it will have undergone thorough testing both in the workshop and the field. Its initial launch will be limited to a few hundred exemplars in a unique colour before it becomes available as a B-spoke option widely available to consumers; the retrofit option will follow a year later.

Until next time,

The Brompton team

New best time broke an hour.

http://maps.google.com/?q=http://share.abvio.com/7cb0/1020/4dc2/c2c1/Cyclemeter-Cycle-20110627-1927.kml

I did not even think about this but the ride from my office to my apartment broke the record time last night.  It used to be 61minutes and yesterday was 57 minutes.  I don't think I pedaled faster, it was as usual.  May be because not many traffic lights stopped me yesterday just by chance.  I guess I was just lucky.

I am not going to be too conscious about breaking the record again, otherwise I would have more chances to be involved with accidents.

SO GOOD, SO NICE, I GOT YOU!

I like Brompton very much and there is no other bikes I can commute with like I mentioned before.  But as I have seen many cross bikes on the streets, I can not stop myself from being attracted by them.  I mean they attract me all the time.

I have to make money in advance to buy a cross bike.  But I can feel it is not long before I buy a cross bike.

Cool wind on route 319

On the way back home, I could choose either route 418 or 319.  Both routes are comfortable for cyclists and I take one of these every time.  Yesterday, I chose route 319, Gaien-Higashi Dori, and I found that the air in some part of the route is slightly cooler than other places.   May be because this area is surrounded by trees called Ginguu Forest.  Since I was riding on my Brompton, it took only five minutes or so to pass through there.  But I could definitely feel the difference and It was so comfortable.

Humid June wind

Two months has passed since I came back to Japan and my bicycle commuting career has become two months.  The good news is I got used to commute by Brompton for a little longer than one hour.  The bad news is it is not a special experience any more for me to complete 16 kilometer ride from my office to my apartment.  Not special enough to write something on my blog.

It is rainy season now in Tokyo.  Fortunately it was not heavy rain and I could come home by bicycle last night. The night like yesterday, the air tend to be humid and the wind blowing against me during cycling is also humid and not very comfortable.

The temperature will rise up to 35 degree in Celcius in July and August.  Sometimes over 30 degree even at night.  I will tell you how I feel the wind during summer night in Tokyo.

Commuting with Brompton in Tokyo Brompton

As you might know, commuting trains or subways in Tokyo are very crowded with some exceptions.  Generally speaking, trains toward Central Tokyo are unbelievably crowded whereas Trains from Tokyo towards suburban areas are not necessarily crowded and some of them carry only a few people in each car.

Fortunately, the overground trains I usually take are not very crowded and being in the train is tolerable for me even during rush hours.  What I meant to say tolerable is that I can read newspaper during the journey.  Or I can say that I can find the place for my Brompton easily.

Inside the overground Trains

There is another route to go to my office, by taking underground trains.  Usually there are more people in underground trains "Nan-boku line" or "Toei Mita line".  It is better than the worst but is hard to find the space for my Brompton in most cases.  And It is somewhat annoying for neighbours to place my Brompton on the floor.

Inside the underground Train

If I take the trains running towards opposite direction from mine,  you will not get in the trains unless you have certain skills to do so.  You will not find  a space for your foot, and you'd better forget about your Brompton.

Sunday mornig family ride

Shiba-Park, Tokyo

The Tokyo Tower. To take the picture of the whole view, many tourists were groveling on the ground .

Another Sunday morning cycling with my son today.  We went to the area around Tokyo Tower this morning.  There are several parks and a big famous temple in this area.  The place we chose was exactly under The Tokyo Tower but it was something like a small forest and we felt as if we were in the mountain area.

So far, we have been to three major parks in central Tokyo area.  Among those three, my son's recommendation is "Yoyogi park"  because of its size and comfortability, and he also mentioned "The cycling road inside the park is really attractive to children like me."

First Bathtime for my Brompton Brompton

It has been two months since I first rode my Brompton in April.  And I noticed that two months is long enough to get greasy muck around the gears and the chain.  So I went to cycle shop this afternoon and bought detergent arranged for bicycles.

To tell the truth, it is my first to do a maintenance of bicycles by myself.  So I followed the tips I have read at the cycle shop.  1.refill the tubes 1.Clean up the chain and the gears, 2.dry them off, 3. lubricate the gears and the chain.

And now, my Brompton is glittering and looks like brand-new.  I can't wait to go out for cycling next morning with my son.
